October: a month of change and celebration

Do you know why October is a special month in many parts of the world? The weather starts to change, the leaves show beautiful colors of red, orange, and yellow, and people begin to prepare for exciting celebrations. Let’s dive into what makes October so unique! This month  is right in the middle of autumn, commonly called fall.  In places like Canada and the US, days become shorter and cooler. It’s the perfect time to wear cozy sweaters, drink hot chocolate, and enjoy long walks in nature. Many people love to visit forest preserves, or botanical gardens to see the colorful trees and take beautiful pictures.

One of the most famous celebrations in October is Halloween, which falls on the 31st.  It’s a night full of costumes, decorations, and candy. Children go trick-or-treating, knocking on doors and asking for candy. Adults often join the fun by decorating their homes with pumpkins, skeletons, and spiders, or by attending costume parties.

Not every country celebrates Halloween the same way. For example, in Mexico, people start preparing for “Día de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead), which begins on November 1st.

Families set up altars, decorate with flowers, and remember their loved ones. It’s a time when families visit the cemetery to bring flowers to their departed ones too.

In some places they plan for a picnic during the day, and you wouldn’t believe it but in some locations like the island of Janitzio and other cemeteries in the  region of Michoacán, people even plan  for overnight vigils that  include decorating graves with candles, flowers, and offerings, and they stay with their departed loved ones to share stories, food, and music.

In Germany, they celebrate Oktoberfest, a world-famous festival with music, food, and traditional clothes.

October is not only special for the events that surround it, but also for its magical moon. They say that there’s no more stunning moon than the one we see during this month. And they’re right! There are nights when the moon looks so bright and big that one can only stare in awe.

In the end no matter where you live, October is one of the most special months of the year and you get to choose how you appreciate it.

Thank you Miss Adri for sharing it. It’s a pleasure to read this article. I love October sunsets here in Queretaro. They are beautiful moments that invite us to stop and began to contemplate them. Colorful sunset where pink, roses, yellow, orange and red brushstrokes on the blue canvas of the sky or on the white and gray clouds, creatkng a dance of color, which lasts for a few minutes, providing an immeasurable emotional peace.
