TEAM DOG OR TEAM CAT?

By Miss Adriana Medrano

If you’re thinking about bringing a pet into your life, you’re in for a real treat! But whether you’re “team dog” or “team cat”, there are some key things to consider before you make a decision.

Both dogs and cats make great pets, but they can have very different personalities, needs and care requirements. Cats are generally less active than dogs and require less exercise. They’re also generally more independent. Of course every cat is different, and you could have a real cuddle pet on your hands.

Dogs tend to require more exercise and attention. They can also be more destructive and aggressive than cats. So, which one is right for you? Let’s dive into it:

Cat owner considerations:

  • Cats are independent creatures, capable of entertaining themselves and staying alone while you travel. When they’re at home with you, they can provide endless entertainment with their antics.
  • Cats are well suited for small spaces like apartments, turning any spot into a playground.
  • They’re not high maintenance pets, giving you more “me time” than other pets.
  • Cats go to the bathroom in their litter box, so walking them is not necessary.
  • Cats are quieter. There’s an occasional meow but they usually keep quiet.
  • In general, cats live longer than dogs.
  • Even though cats don’t need to go outside to go to the bathroom, you need to clean their litter box regularly.
  • Cats may scratch furniture if they don’t have a scratching post.

Dog owner considerations:

  • Dogs provide unconditional love. They’re experts at dispensing love and loyalty.
  • They’re playful, always ready for a new adventure.
  • Dogs are natural icebreakers. They help you connect with other dog lovers for an easy going conversation that could lead to something else.
  • Dogs motivate staying fit. Walking them everyday ensures staying active and healthy.
  • They’re the best snuggle companions. When you’re ready to relax your dog cuddles with you, which can come handy especially when the weather is cold.
  • Dogs require more time commitment in the form of daily walks and playing time with them.
  • They need to be trained and this takes time and patience.
  • Unless you have a small breed, bigger dogs need more space, preferably a backyard or patio.
  • Dogs bark so they can get loud. You need to consider this especially for your neighbors sake.
  • If traveling, you’ll need to think about a pet sitter, or a place with dog friendly accommodations, which can be expensive.
  • Caring for a dog generally costs more than caring for a cat.

Now you know!  In my personal experience, dogs are the best pets you could ever have. My years with Goliath were some of the most fulfilling years of my life, and I will forever be grateful to him for having taught me what unconditional love is all about.
